Dependable Flame Detector Amplifier with Forney’s IDD 9000

Flame detector amplifiers receive a signal from the flame detector and determine whether or not a flame is present. It is critical for accurate flame discrimination, especially in light of challenging NFPA 85 requirements. Tuning features are also required to set up the system for various boiler conditions, as there are multiple types of flame detectors (UV and IR) as well as different fuels such as oil, gas, and coal. The Forney IDD 9000 can provide a robust solution to ensure accurate discrimination, advanced tuning, and dual-channel capabilities.

Flame Detector Amplifiers – Features and Benefits

The IDD 9000 flame detector has numerous benefits as listed below:

  1. Easy Mounting: The IDD 9000 is supplied in a panel or a rack mount configuration making installation into existing systems easy. Legacy Forney flame detector amplifiers can also be easily upgraded to the IDD 9000.

  1. Dual Channel: The IDD 9000 is capable of supporting two independent flame detectors using its dual-channel functionality. Each individual channel can either process IR or UV flame signals. The channels are completely separate, with each having its own independent processor, inputs, and outputs.

  1. Local Display: The IDD 9000 has local display capabilities to indicate the status of the system and flame detectors.

  1. Digital Signal Processor: A DSP gives the IDD 9000 the ability to offer advanced tuning capabilities with increased frequency response and spectrum weighting capabilities. This makes it especially useful in challenging applications such as low NOx burners and opposed-fired boilers.

  1. Multiple Operating Profiles: The IDD 9000 can store up to eight operating profiles for multiple fuels and burner conditions. This allows either manual or remote switching using the BMS (Burner Management System) to select optimal operating profiles.

  1. Approvals: The IDD 9000 is FM and CE-approved. FM approval means that safe operation is guaranteed and insurance rates can be lower. CE approval means that the IDD 9000 conforms to European Union health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Applications

A flame detector amplifier takes a signal from a flame detector and determines whether or not a flame has been detected. It is essentially a signal processor that can be connected to the BMS or can be used for local indication of boiler conditions and flame detector status. A flame detector amplifier is used wherever flame detectors are needed, including industrial furnaces and power plants for example. The Forney IDD 9000 can also store multiple profiles to switch between different fuels and flame detectors.

What Is the NFPA 85 Requirement?

The purpose of the NFPA 85 requirement is to ensure that amplifier equipment can prove that a flame is not detected prior to the introduction of fuel to a burner or boiler. This is to ensure that the system can differentiate between real and false alarms to prevent dangerous conditions within the boiler or burner. These requirements are met by employing advanced tuning capabilities made possible with digital signal processing (DSP).

About the IDD 9000 Flame Detector Amplifier

The Forney IDD 9000 flame detector amplifier is designed to work with all Forney IDD and UV-4 flame detectors. The IDD 9000 should be installed in a separate NEMA 4 equipment cabinet if harsh conditions are expected.
